Over the past two weeks, you couldn’t help but hear about the grand opening of West Marine’s new flagship store in Virginia Beach.

The reason? The Rubin Communications media blitz that positioned West Marine and its top local staff on TV, in print and on prominent local news web sites. With interviews on “The Hampton Roads Show,” WVEC-TV, WNIS 790 AM and key write-ups in The Virginian Pilot, Inside Business and WTKR.com, West Marine was top of mind across South Hampton Roads.

Imagine eating delicious seafood, talking one-on-one with candidates for statewide and local office AND raising money for worthwhile charities. Oh, and did we mention the gorgeous view of the Elizabeth River?

Since 1993, the Kiwanis Club has raised more than $1 million for nonprofits across Hampton Roads at the annual harbor party and seafood fest in Norfolk’s Town Point Park. Tickets are on sale now for the 2013 party, which promises all-you-can-eat seafood and cold beer in addition to meet-and-greets with local political figures. (more…)

Will America decide the nation’s top toilet is “functional art” inspired by an Italian masterpiece on show at a Swiss museum? Perhaps it’ll be the “Pac Man” potty inside an arcade that prides itself on preserving the “golden age” of gaming?

Last week, Joel Rubin (AKA my dad) and I drove 10 hours west to mountainous Wise County, Va for the 14th annual Mission of Mercy (MOM) Project. Dentists come from all over the state to volunteer and provide dental care for people in need.

We went to MOM to produce a video for one of our clients, the Virginia Dental Association (VDA). Many VDA dentists make the annual two-day pilgrimage to Wise; some have even worked the clinic all 14 years.

My son Danny (account manager at RCG) and I are leaving today on a unique client-focused odyssey. We will be crossing Virginia on Route 58, our final destination an amazing annual event at the Wise County Fairgrounds near Bristol. It’s called Mission of Mercy (MOM), a three-day free dental clinic for residents of that relatively poor area of Virginia, put on by members of the Virginia Dental Association Foundation (VDAF) for whom we provide public relations services.
