“Rubins on the Road”– Mission of Mercy in Southwest Virginia

My son Danny (account manager at RCG) and I are leaving today on a unique client-focused odyssey. We will be crossing Virginia on Route 58, our final destination an amazing annual event at the Wise County Fairgrounds near Bristol. It’s called Mission of Mercy (MOM), a three-day free dental clinic for residents of that relatively poor area of Virginia, put on by members of the Virginia Dental Association Foundation (VDAF) for whom we provide public relations services.

Virginia

Dentists will treat thousands of men, women and children Friday-Sunday, starting at dawn. We will photograph and videotape MOMs, which the VDAF is now conducting in multiple locations across the state. The dentists, all of whom donate their time, will see the 50,000th MOMs patient on Friday, which is a tremendous accomplishment.

ABC News is expected to be there too. For me, this is like a flashback to the eight years I produced stories for WAVY TV under the banner “Joel Rubin’s Virginia.” If MOMs, which started in 1999, had been around then, I certainly would have covered it.

Along the way Danny and I will stop at dental practices in Suffolk, Emporia, Danville, Martinsville and other southside cities to visit with their staffs and shoot photos for a VDA campaign called “A Healthy Body Starts with a Healthy Mouth.” We will be sending in pictures from the road. If you want to learn more about MOMs, visit the Web site.
