A group of forward-thinking community leaders has teamed with the Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships (August 17-24) to create “ICE on the Beach in August,” an umbrella event for the late-summer action at the Oceanfront. The next president of the Virginia State Bar believes the judiciary deserves more respect and support than it receives from the other two branches of government and intends to use his passion and position to profess just that.

“We have seen the General Assembly fail to fill judicial vacancies in a timely manner, and a prior governor’s administration attempted to raid our cash reserves to balance the state budget,” says Kevin E. Martingayle, who will be sworn in as the new VSB president on Friday evening June 13 during the organization’s 76th annual meeting banquet at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel. “We successfully resisted efforts to take money that was supposed to be used only for the Bar’s important operations and activities. But we have to remain vigilant, and working to protect the judicial branch and improve our profession will be high priorities for me.” (more…)

VIRGINIA BEACH (June 3, 2014) – Danny Kline is the new president of Virginia Beach-based Payday Payroll, succeeding his father Andy who founded the firm in 1985.

The younger Kline joined the company in 2006 and spent the past two years as acting president. The 34 year old will now formally oversee the company’s day-to-day operations, and his father will be chief executive officer.

VIRGINIA BEACH (June 5, 2014) – Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay will open its doors June 10 to 5th graders at Seatack Elementary School for fun on the beach and two uncommon outdoor pastimes: bocce and croquet.

Members of the active senior living community, who frequently play bocce and croquet on Westminster’s green space overlooking the Bay, have visited Seatack several times to teach the youngsters the rules of both games. On June 10 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, the 5th graders will visit Westminster to celebrate their “promotion” to middle school, romp in the sand and play bocce and croquet with the residents. (more…)

Local companies with truck fleets and rising fuel costs to power them have a new ally and advisor.

Ed Farmer, whose grandfather began a still thriving propane business in Caroline County, Virginia, and his wife Mona have launched Future Energy LLC, to guide fleet owners interested in saving significant money by converting their vehicles to compressed natural gas.  “CNG is abundant and readily available,” says Farmer, who earlier this decade helped his former employer, a Chesapeake-based waste/recycling company, to become the first private waste hauler in the state to begin converting its fleet from diesel to CNG.  “Today they are on course to reduce their fuel costs by 50% and their emissions by 90%.  It made sense for them and does for many others too.” (more…)
