VIRGINIA BEACH — Dogs are capable of performing many roles in life aside from being a cuddle buddy.

Police train them to find suspects, they can be ring bearers at weddings and at Care-A-Lot’s Lovers’ Extravaganza last weekend, they competed as athletes in DockDogs, an international canine water sport organization.

The Virginia Beach-based pet store featured the organization during its weekend event, which kicked off Friday at noon and ran through Sunday. According to its website, DockDogs gives pets the chance to flex their jumping and swimming skills. (more…)

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. – This year, Norfolk resident, Crystal Partain and her pit bull, Pixie, will be competing in the Pet Lovers’ Extravaganza DockDogs competition, something Crystal couldn’t have imagined four years ago. At that time, Crystal had rescued Pixie from an animal shelter right before she was about to be euthanized.

NORFOLK — Getting into college can be an arduous task.

There’s paper work to fill out, files to dig up, registration fees to be paid and research to be done, but one organization has made the process easy for several Southside students who want to continue their education.

About 2,700 students gathered at the Ted Contstant Convocation Center Tuesday morning to cheer, dance and wave signs sporting emblems of their future school at the Access College Foundation’s “College Commitment Day.” (more…)

WHAT: The Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation is hosting the grand opening of The Spot at Lake Edward, a new space that serves as a neighborhood hub for families. The goal of the townhouse, located at the end of a cul-de-sac on Pickering Street in Virginia Beach, is to engage neighbors, strengthen community bonds and provide a safe and secure environment for all residents. WHAT: More than 2,000 students from across Hampton Roads and Northampton County will gather for ACCESS College Commitment Day to celebrate their decision to further their education. 1,200 participated in the inaugural event in 2016. Since 1988, ACCESS has helped more than 55,000 students go to college by guiding families in South Hampton Roads and Northampton County through the admission and financial aid processes. During the high energy, one-hour long program on the arena floor, students, some of whom will be the first in their families to go to college, will share their excitement about this important step in their future on social media using #CatchMeInCollege2017.

NO ONE, particularly a low-income student, should lose a scholarship to college simply because of the complexity and difficulty of a form.

But it almost happened to Bryce Norwood. The Virginia Beach student was a year into his undergraduate education at James Madison University in Harrisonburg when he had to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to continue receiving the college’s Centennial Scholarship.
