Jerrauld “Jay” Jones, a Norfolk native and graduate of the University of Virginia Law School, is joining the Hampton Roads law firm Bischoff Martingayle P.C. as a partner. Starting July 5, he will join attorney Emily Munn in the firm’s Monticello Arcade office in Norfolk. Four other Bischoff Martingayle lawyers, including founders William Bischoff and Kevin Martingayle, have their primary offices on Pacific Avenue at the Virginia Beach oceanfront.

Bischoff Martingayle specializes in civil and commercial litigation, and Jay Jones will enhance that reputation according to Bill Bischoff. “Jay is one of the finest young attorneys in our region with excellent analytical, writing, speaking and interpersonal skills. We are very excited to have him join us as a partner.” Jones graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2010 and from UVA Law School in 2015. Between those two academic pursuits, he worked in New York for Goldman Sachs. Jones comes to Bischoff Martingayle after two years with the Norfolk law firm of Willcox & Savage PC. (more…)

Traci Wagner banged her fist on the passenger side window and screamed in pain.

Her husband, Nick, pressed the gas pedal harder as he drove south on North Great Neck Road. They sailed through a red light at Old Donation Parkway.

Sentara Princess Anne Hospital was still eight miles away when Traci screamed again.

They weren’t going to make it.

It is probably counter intuitive that a city as large as Virginia Beach (over 450,000 in population) would still rely on volunteers, a fairly rural tradition, to provide emergency medical services.

But if you’re injured or sick in the resort city, the odds are an ambulance manned by regular citizens, well trained to administer life saving care, will arrive at the scene. Today more than a thousand men and women, ages 18 and up, answer the call, many “running” a weekly 12-hour shift that they incorporate into their otherwise busy work or family schedules.

Shouldn’t someone thank them for this sacrifice of their time and energy? (more…)

VIRGINIA BEACH — Dogs are capable of performing many roles in life aside from being a cuddle buddy.

Police train them to find suspects, they can be ring bearers at weddings and at Care-A-Lot’s Lovers’ Extravaganza last weekend, they competed as athletes in DockDogs, an international canine water sport organization.

The Virginia Beach-based pet store featured the organization during its weekend event, which kicked off Friday at noon and ran through Sunday. According to its website, DockDogs gives pets the chance to flex their jumping and swimming skills. (more…)

At that time, Crystal had rescued Pixie from an animal shelter right before she was about to be euthanized.

NORFOLK — Getting into college can be an arduous task.

There’s paper work to fill out, files to dig up, registration fees to be paid and research to be done, but one organization has made the process easy for several Southside students who want to continue their education.

About 2,700 students gathered at the Ted Contstant Convocation Center Tuesday morning to cheer, dance and wave signs sporting emblems of their future school at the Access College Foundation’s “College Commitment Day.” (more…)

WHAT: The Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation is hosting the grand opening of The Spot at Lake Edward, a new space that serves as a neighborhood hub for families. The goal of the townhouse, located at the end of a cul-de-sac on Pickering Street in Virginia Beach, is to engage neighbors, strengthen community bonds and provide a safe and secure environment for all residents.
