Virginia Maritime Association (VMA) to Celebrate 100 Years by Signing a New Charter During Unique Ceremony in Richmond

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NORFOLK, VA (February 6, 2019) – On Thursday, February 13 in Richmond, the Virginia Maritime Association (VMA) will set a course for its next century of service by replicating a milestone event from its humble beginnings exactly one hundred years ago.

At 630 p.m. at the Downtown Marriott at 5th and Broad Streets, VMA leaders will sign a new charter, commemorating one penned on February 13,1920 by 56 businessmen that launched the Norfolk Maritime Exchange (precursor to the VMA).

This second charter will bear a more diverse set of signatures that reflect the face of the maritime economy across the Commonwealth in the 21st century. Industry professionals from VMA statewide chapters will pen their names and underscore that the maritime industry, which includes commerce on the water, on the road and by rail, plays a critical role for businesses across the state.

“We are paying homage to those who had the vision, 100 years ago, to bring our industry together in Hampton Roads while committing ourselves and future leaders to continue growing our vital industry,” says Raymond A. Newlon, chairman of the VMA’s 100th anniversary committee. “You only turn a hundred once, and we’re devoting much of our attention this year to not only look back at our accomplishments but also forward to what our member companies can contribute to Virginia’s economy in this century and beyond.”

Media is encouraged to arrive by 6:00 p.m. to ensure they capture the signing ceremony. The VMA will also display the charter signed in 1920 so attendees can view the old and new documents side by side.

VMA Executive Vice President David White will be available for interview. The VMA has also invited the governor and his cabinet as well as all state delegates and senators.
