RICHMOND — Virginia Dental Association dentists and oral surgeons provided free care for 1,232 patients during last month’s Wise County Remote Area Medical, the group reported on Monday.
The VDA estimates the total value of donated services during the 17th annual Wise County RAM at $1,323,789 during the three-day event at the Wise County Fairgrounds. VDA volunteers administered exams, fillings, extractions, cleanings, root canals, complete and partial dentures and other procedures.
The VDA reported 1,401 fillings, 3,368 extractions, 140 cleanings, 24 gross debridements, 164 fluoride treatments, 1,168 X-rays, 94 root canals, 102 complete dentures, 42 partial dentures, 19 denture adjustments and 20 denture realignments among services performed at the event.
VDA has been a huge part of Wise County RAM since its inception 17 years ago, participating every year. Wise County RAM is the nation’s largest such event offering free medical, dental and vision health care services to all comers.
Including last month’s 17th annual Wise County RAM, the VDA reports that over that time span well over $17.8 million worth of treatment and services have been delivered to more than 21,000 total patients.
Wise County RAM is organized by The Health Wagon, the region’s free mobile health clinic, along with multiple partners in a massive annual all volunteer effort including the VDA, the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry and Dental Hygiene, Virginia Health Care Foundation, the Lions Club of Virginia and a host of other sponsors.
