Every Monday morning, our staff sits down with coffee, breakfast and ideas. We take turns going around the table and discussing where we are on projects, what’s on the grid for this week and what we can do for our clients.

This week we happened upon the topic of a recent PR Tactics article about Corporate Social Responsibility, which is a company’s obligation to conduct its business in a manner that positively impacts its community. At RCG, we take this role seriously; each of us volunteers our public relations knowledge for pro-bono work.

Time and again, we see business owners who create a corporate video to promote the work they do and the proud employees who help them. We think videos are a terrific marketing tool that will “sell” for you, even if you’re not in the room when someone watches.

That being said, we often observe people create videos with all the wrong qualities and what could have been a memorable product falls flat. Very flat.

Over the past two weeks, you couldn’t help but hear about the grand opening of West Marine’s new flagship store in Virginia Beach.

The reason? The Rubin Communications media blitz that positioned West Marine and its top local staff on TV, in print and on prominent local news web sites. With interviews on “The Hampton Roads Show,” WVEC-TV, WNIS 790 AM and key write-ups in The Virginian Pilot, Inside Business and WTKR.com, West Marine was top of mind across South Hampton Roads.

Outlet: The Virginian-Pilot

West Marine, the boat and water products retailer, announced Thursday that it plans to close its three South Hampton Roads stores and consolidate them into a “flagship” store in Virginia Beach.

The 23,000-square-foot store is slated to open Sept. 12 at 4000 Virginia Beach Blvd., in Loehmann’s Plaza Shopping Center. It is bigger than the three existing stores combined, according to West Marine, based in Watsonville, Calif. (more…)
