Lyon Shipyard in Norfolk is always on the lookout for new talent to work in its shops, in its dry-docks and on the Navy and commercial vessels that are its bread and butter.
To put its best foot forward and show the diversity among its more than 200 employees, we suggested a 3-minute video for the web and played at corporate events.
Ironically the day we recommended it, Lyon was planning one of its twice-a-year company picnics for the next day. Talk about perfect timing.
Joel Rubin and videographer Paul Klages cleared their schedules and attended, both to record men and women at work but also show them chowing down on hamburgers and hot dogs along with owner George Lyon and the rest of the executive team.
Joel and Paul roamed the crowd, collecting unscripted positive comments about Lyon’s reputation as a fair employer that gives everyone a chance to grow professionally and financially. A number of people praised the “family atmosphere” and friendliness exhibited at the yard, which has facilities near Harbor Park on the north side of the Elizabeth River as well as on the southside just over the Campostella Bridge.
