Hundreds of Volunteers Will Gather in Multiple Locations at the Oceanfront On Earth Day to Make the Sand, Streets and Boardwalk “Beachy Clean”

What? Keep It Beachy Clean Earth Day Community Clean-Up
When? Thursday April 22, 4-6pm
Where? Eight locations between 31st Street and Rudee Inlet, Virginia Beach
Who? Sponsored by Virginia Beach Hotel Association, Virginia Beach Restaurant Association, Eco Maniac Company, Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, Atlantic Avenue Association, ViBe Creative District and Lynnhaven River NOW

300-400 volunteers will meet at the oceanfront on Earth Day to pick up trash along the boardwalk, Atlantic Avenue, on the beach, at Rudee Loop and Inlet, Norfolk Avenue and throughout the ViBe Creative District. Organizers typically conduct a clean-up in the fall, but they moved it to the spring to spruce up the area for visitors. “We’re Open and want to show our visitors from inside and outside the region that we’re ready for the summer season, and we hope that all guests will then help us Keep It Beachy Clean!” says Christina Trapani, Director of the Keep It Beachy Clean Program.

Trapani says volunteers can sign up for the location they want at KeepItBeachyClean.org/EarthDay2021 and report to that site on Thursday to pick up one of 300 green t-shirts (first come, first serve), provided by Dominion Energy and the new Virginia Beach Mayor’s Commission on Offshore Wind and Clean Energy.

Volunteers are urged to wear comfortable shoes, clothing and work gloves as well as a mask unless they are social distancing. They should also bring a reusable water bottle and ocean safe sunscreen. Bags and buckets will be provided.

Media should call Joel Rubin of the Mayor’s Commission on Offshore Wind at 757-287-0361 to determine best location to capture footage and/or stage live reports from 4-6pm.
