Habitat for Humanity to Stage 2nd Annual Women Build Week May 10-14

NORFOLK, VA (March 25, 2021) – Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads (Habitat SHR) is recruiting teams for its 2nd Annual Women Build Week May 10-14 from 8am-5pm daily at 303 South Broad Street in Suffolk. The project recruits and empowers women of all walks of life to come together to work alongside experienced Habitat volunteers in the construction of a home for a qualified, low-income family.

Women Build Week 2021 is a chance to gain skills and, in addition, introduce women to the construction trades as a career path. “It is a wonderful opportunity to work together doing something outside of what we do on a daily basis – work in an office,” said Caitlyn Gurnee with Wall Einhorn & Chernitzer, P.C. The company participated in the 2020 event.

Habitat SHR is looking for businesses to be Women Build Week sponsors which enables them to have a team on site. The company can be either a women-owned firm or a business seeking to provide a unique opportunity for their women employees. Teams generally are on site for a single four hour shift, either morning or afternoon, with lunch and a t-shirt provided. Sponsorship levels range from $250-$5,000. Individuals can also participate by raising or donating $150. Sponsorship information can be found at

Habitat SHR has shown that homeownership is a powerful way to break the cycle of generational poverty. Studies reveal that children of homeowners are:

• 20% less likely to become teen parents
• 25% more likely to graduate from high school
• Twice as likely to graduate college
• 60% more likely to own their own homes within 10 years of moving out of their parents’ homes

Women Build Week 2021 is presented by Birdsong Peanuts and is sponsored by WAVY TV/Hampton Roads Show, Tidewater Family Plus, Hampton Roads Weekly and WWDE and WVKL radio stations. Sponsors to date include Tidewater Home Funding, Plasser American Corporation, Wall Einhorn & Chernitzer, P.C., The Dragas Companies and Ironclad.
