WestJet’s Brilliant PR Move Reminds Us to Give Memorably

By Jessica Bensten and Rachael Keshishian

Our hats are off to WestJet airlines this week. The WestJet Christmas Miracle idea has, quite literally, taken off.

Unsuspecting passengers were asked by Santa Claus what they really wanted for Christmas before boarding a flight in Canada. When they landed, wrapped presents addressed to each passenger slid down into the baggage carousel and the rest is Internet history. As of today, the video has over 7 million likes on YouTube. If you hadn’t heard of WestJet, you have now!

Check out the video:

We can learn a lot from WestJet’s holiday surprise. The staff of the airline created a lasting impression, built customer loyalty, increased brand recognition and made a positive impact in the spirit of giving. At RCG, we understand some companies don’t have the budget pull off an expensive PR stunt like WestJet. It’s the intention behind the gift that’s important.

Whether we’re sending a gift basket with Joel’s famous banana bread or a donation to our favorite charity, we like to recognize our clients every year. For 2013, after a moving Virginia Beach Forum World War II event organized by our staff, we are donating to Honor Flight in the name of our clients.

If you’re looking for ideas on how to thank your clients and wish them Happy Holidays, here is a list of local resources we’ve compiled for you:

  1. Holiday Card: Nothing beats opening a greeting card instead of a bill. If you’re a little late to the game, have no fear. Bizport in Virginia Beach can turn around a card and envelope in just a few days. Or if you’re printing in-house, we recommend Cartridge World for a large ink order.
  2. Gift Baskets: Now is the time to place your order. We highly recommend a past client, Please and Thankyou. You’ll want to talk to Ruby – she’ll have great ideas that fit your budget.
  3. Holiday Parties: At the end of the year, the RCG staff gets together for a holiday party to sit back, relax and enjoy each other’s company away from the pinging inbox. If you’re looking for a great spot, try Yard House, Pacifica, Surf Club, Sonoma Wine Bar or Eat.
  4. Charitable Donations: Throughout the years, we’ve worked with some really outstanding nonprofits. Nothing makes our hearts fuller than knowing we’ve helped make the community a little better. If you’re looking for an end-of-the-year charity, please consider Roc Solid Foundation, CHKD, Honor Flight or one of the local FoodBanks. You’ll be happy you did.
  5. Social Media Holiday Message: If the above items are still out of your price range, start small this year. Social media is free! What if you came up with a freebie to give away? Try creating a meme that wishes your fans a happy holiday. Or for a laugh, take some employee photos and drop them into Elf Yourself. It’s easy to share, and keeps the holiday spirit alive.
