Our hats are off to WestJet airlines this week. The WestJet Christmas Miracle idea has, quite literally, taken off.

Unsuspecting passengers were asked by Santa Claus what they really wanted for Christmas before boarding a flight in Canada. When they landed, wrapped presents addressed to each passenger slid down into the baggage carousel and the rest is Internet history. As of today, the video has over 7 million likes on YouTube. Thanksgiving used to be a sacred American holiday, and no company would even imagine opening the doors to do business.

Slowly, Turkey Day has morphed into “Gray Thursday,” in which major chains flip on the lights during the holiday to make a few extra bucks. At the same time, several other retailers decided to stay closed and give its employees the time off.

Imagine eating delicious seafood, talking one-on-one with candidates for statewide and local office AND raising money for worthwhile charities. Oh, and did we mention the gorgeous view of the Elizabeth River?

Since 1993, the Kiwanis Club has raised more than $1 million for nonprofits across Hampton Roads at the annual harbor party and seafood fest in Norfolk’s Town Point Park. Tickets are on sale now for the 2013 party, which promises all-you-can-eat seafood and cold beer in addition to meet-and-greets with local political figures. (more…)
