RICHMOND, VA – On Tuesday, November 15, Richmond’s homeless population will have the opportunity to receive a dental exam and dental treatment. In partnership with the VCU School of Dentistry and Dental Hygiene, the Virginia Dental Association (VDA), and the Virginia Dental Association Foundation (VDAF), Project Homeless Connect allows upwards of 75 patients to be seen for an exam, cleaning or extractions as needed. Patients will be seen from 8 a.m – 3 p.m., and the event takes place at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

The event is part of the Mission of Mercy (MOM) program, in which VDA dentists and others volunteer their time to provide free dental care to those in need. Chesapeake, VA – Residents in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk and Virginia Beach can now recycle food and beverage cartons as part of their curbside recycling program. With the help of a grant from the Carton Council of North America, TFC Recycling, Virginia’s largest recycler, was able to install an optical sorting unit programmed to remove the items. The cartons are then baled and used to make new paper products and sustainable building materials.

Cartons are easy to recognize and are available in two types – shelf-stable, such as for juice, soup, broth and wine; and refrigerated, including containers for milk, juice, cream and egg substitutes. The number of products packaged in cartons continues to grow, and now residents of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk and Virginia Beach will be able to recycle more packaging than before. (more…)

When Walter Wilkins of Norfolk saw a recent network news story about a minor traffic accident that took the life of a 26-year-old New Jersey girl, it stopped him in his tracks.

Jewel Brangman died because her airbag exploded.   “It was a fender bender,” her father Alexander Brangman said. “So she should’ve walked away from it. … If you could imagine a sharp metal of a hand grenade, it hit her carotid artery and she bled out. She lost nine pints of blood. She coded three times.” (more…)

The restoration of a badly damaged shoreline along the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River continues this Saturday morning August 27 from 10 a.m. – Noon with the planting of native wetlands grasses.

On August 13, some 50 volunteers from the law firm of Pender & Coward in Virginia Beach, Kerr Environmental Services, Bridge Trust Title, City of Norfolk, and a local Boy Scout troop spent several hours picking up a ton or more of trash, most of it left behind by some 30 rusting vessels in an inlet near the Campostella Bridge. A P&C environmental attorney, Jim Lang, organized the effort after filing a court action that forced the owner to remove the ships. Lang’s client wanted the “floating junkyard” removed because it interfered with his use of the water at his property. (more…)
