Raleigh, NC – Towne Insurance announces that on August 1, 2014, executive Judy Fourie retired from full-time status. In retirement, she will continue to provide consulting services and assist with special projects.

Fourie joined Towne Insurance after the agency acquired Greenville-based The Clement Companies in 2012. Her insurance career has spanned more than 35 years, exclusively in the Triangle area, where she received the Triangle Business Journal Women in Business Award in 2003. Fourie has been dedicated to her community and profession, serving as President of Civitan and the National Association of Women Business Owners on two occasions. In 2007 and 2008, she was Chair of the Red Cross Ball, the Red Cross Triangle Area Chapter’s largest annual fundraiser. (more…)

Norfolk, Va. – The annual Duck Tape Regatta, which has raised more than $150,000 for local charities since 2003, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Willoughby Harbor Marina (1525 Bayville St.) in Norfolk. This year, all proceeds will benefit the Roc Solid Foundation, which builds hope for children battling cancer. (more…)

Members of both the Stan Taylor Group and The Clement Companies, which joined Towne Insurance in 2011 and 2012 respectively, have moved to the new location. The Stan Taylor Group at 3826 Bland Road, and The Clement Companies at 51 Kilmayne Drive in Cary, will be a part of the relocation. JULY 28, 2014 — An Achievable Dream, the pioneering educational program begun 22 years ago in Newport News to benefit children in underserved communities, is now in Virginia Beach at Seatack Elementary School, 912 South Birdneck Road.

After extensive teacher training and parent interaction, the first pupils in grades kindergarten through second grade are now participating in a two-week Summer Intersession, during which they are becoming acclimated to wearing uniforms, motivational morning assemblies, as well as the Academy’s unique SAME® (social, academic, and moral education) curriculum.

On Wednesday July 30, from 8:00 – 9:30 am, media representatives are invited to watch the students arrive at school and be greeted with handshakes by adults from the community, before beginning their daily activities.   Principal Mary Daniels and leadership from Virginia Beach City Public Schools and An Achievable Dream will be available for interviews.

The nearly 200 children in grades K-2, who come primarily from the Seatack attendance zone, will return to the school on September 2 when classes begin across Virginia Beach. Zoned third through fifth grade students will continue at Seatack, and the principal and staff will work to share some An Achievable Dream experiences with all students. One grade level will be added to the Seatack, An Achievable Dream Academy each subsequent year.

(Alexandria, VA July 18, 2014) – A coalition of eight taxicab and limousine companies – all locally-owned and based in Virginia — today filed a civil action in Fairfax County Circuit Court to enjoin the California-based transit companies of Uber and Lyft from operating in Virginia because they lack the necessary legal permits required by the Commonwealth.

The civil action describes events, which began in 2013, when Uber and Lyft targeted Northern Virginia for their “app-based” business without obtaining the permits either for broker or taxi services. Those permits are typically issued by localities with uniform requirements such as driver background checks, proof of insurance, and levels of community service (including disabled access). (more…)
