RICHMOND — Virginia Dental Association dentists and oral surgeons provided free care for 1,232 patients during last month’s Wise County Remote Area Medical, the group reported on Monday.

The VDA estimates the total value of donated services during the 17th annual Wise County RAM at $1,323,789 during the three-day event at the Wise County Fairgrounds. VDA volunteers administered exams, fillings, extractions, cleanings, root canals, complete and partial dentures and other procedures.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) —  The Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation is gearing up for its second annual “Back-to-School Prep Rally.”

The event, featuring guest speaker Dr. Aaron Spence, superintendent of Virginia Beach Public Schools, is meant to get students and families in Hampton Roads excited and ready for the next school year.

Local celebrities, high school and college bands, cheerleaders and dance troops will perform for the crowd, while attendees enjoy refreshments and enter to win prizes including tablets, tickets to local family events and gift cards.

The event will be held Saturday, August 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A Portsmouth woman who spent years fundraising for ALS research is now suffering from the deadly disease, and is determined to make the most of the time she has left.

Doctors diagnosed Beth Prever with ALS in April. She spent the previous eight years leading the charge to raise nearly $800,000 for research to fight the disease. (more…)

When Beth Williams Prever lost 100 pounds, it was the toughest thing she had ever done. Until now.

She was diagnosed in April of this year with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The neurological condition has no cure. In time, it weakens muscles so those afflicted cannot move. Or swallow, breathe and talk.

“I would rather lose my speech than my mobility,” said Prever, who lives in Portsmouth. “I hope that the disease will progress very slowly.”

“My mom was always known for her hospitality,” said the president and CEO of the Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation and Second Act Communities. Both nonprofit organizations work to creative innovative solutions to housing needs.

Thomason grew up on the Eastern Shore. She and her three sisters were raised in the close-knit community of Accomac. (more…)

SUFFOLK, Va.— Habitat for Humanity South Hampton Roads is building nine new houses in Hampton Roads and they are looking to find families to move into them.

The homes are being built in the Lake Kennedy homes section of Suffolk. However, there is one problem they are facing: they are struggling to find enough people who can qualify financially to own and live in the houses. (more…)
