The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is one of the most important parts of applying for college.

And this year, the federal government has made some changes to how FAFSA works.

One change is the beginning of the new filing period: You can apply beginning October 1st of every year, whereas before the filing period began on January 1st. (more…)

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Six cyclists finished a 100 mile journey on Friday afternoon. The goal of the ride was to raise money and awareness for children and families battling pediatric cancer.

100 miles on a bike is not an easy feat, but the ride wasn’t about the distance, it was about kids fighting the toughest battles of their lives.

“These families are sometimes in the worst moments of their life and it’s very hard to find a positive,” said Eric Newman, who founded Roc Solid, the organization that planned the ride. (more…)

When Walter Wilkins of Norfolk saw a recent network news story about a minor traffic accident that took the life of a 26-year-old New Jersey girl, it stopped him in his tracks.

Jewel Brangman died because her airbag exploded.   “It was a fender bender,” her father Alexander Brangman said. “So she should’ve walked away from it. … If you could imagine a sharp metal of a hand grenade, it hit her carotid artery and she bled out. She lost nine pints of blood. She coded three times.” (more…)

GRUNDY, VA – Virginia Dental Association (VDA) dentists will offer free care to hundreds of people in Buchanan County at the Grundy MOM Project (Mission of Mercy Project). The event takes place October 1-2 at Riverview Elementary and Middle Schools. VDA members from across the state will join forces to provide much-needed dental care for low-income, uninsured, and underserved adults and children.

At Grundy MOM, a 1 ½ day dental clinic, volunteer dentists offer free services including cleanings, fillings, oral surgery and x-rays using portable dental equipment. (more…)

Housing Hampton Roads and Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads will host an open house on Saturday, September 24 (10 am – 12 pm) at the construction site of nine new homes in the Lake Kennedy section of Suffolk.

Each home, created through a partnership with Housing Hampton Roads and Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, is new construction and one of four housing models. They are each single-family detached units with 3-4 bedrooms and have an average monthly payment between $650-$750. Habitat SHR homes are sold to families with zero percent net interest, no closing costs and a minimum down payment.

The restoration of a badly damaged shoreline along the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River continues this Saturday morning August 27 from 10 a.m. – Noon with the planting of native wetlands grasses.

On August 13, some 50 volunteers from the law firm of Pender & Coward in Virginia Beach, Kerr Environmental Services, Bridge Trust Title, City of Norfolk, and a local Boy Scout troop spent several hours picking up a ton or more of trash, most of it left behind by some 30 rusting vessels in an inlet near the Campostella Bridge. A P&C environmental attorney, Jim Lang, organized the effort after filing a court action that forced the owner to remove the ships. Lang’s client wanted the “floating junkyard” removed because it interfered with his use of the water at his property. (more…)

Cold Spring, KY. (July 5, 2016) – DAV (Disabled American Veterans) announced today that it is expanding a national race series, the DAV 5K, to five cities this fall including Newport News, VA. Atlanta, Boston and Tulsa also join Cincinnati where the DAV 5K originated.

The DAV 5K, which will take place on Sunday, November 13 at City Center at Oyster Point, will include a run, walk, roll and motorcycle ride. The goal is to raise money for critical services DAV provides to military veterans. Registration is now open at www.DAV5K.org.

“We are excited to bring the DAV 5K to Hampton Roads during Veterans Day weekend,” said DAV National Adjutant and CEO Marc Burgess. “It’s very fitting that we are hosting it in southeastern Virginia, a community that has a large military population and a remarkable history in supporting America’s heroes.” (more…)
