Several provisions of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, took effect Oct. 1. Consumers were allowed to shop for plans online last week, and coverage is set to begin Jan. 1. The law and its implications have been widely discussed since its passage in 2010, though much remains to be seen. Here’s a look at what some local experts feel are the good, bad and ugly parts about the law.

OUTLET: Outer Banks Voice

Towne Bank of Currituck celebrated the grand opening of its Southern Shores office with an Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce After Hours function.

The event attracted one of the largest After Hours crowds in many years. The new bank features a beach-like look and feel, combined with some of the old-style bank grandeur that is common among Hampton Roads-based banks.

TowneBank has been named the inaugural winner of the 2013 Corporate Darden Award for Regional Leadership.

The bank will receive the award on Dec. 10 at the Norfolk Waterside Mariott from the CIVIC Leadership Institute.

Cathy Lewis, executive director of CIVIC, said TowneBank was chosen for its efforts to improve the quality of life for people in Hampton Roads. (more…)

Nicole Bartneck still has the stuffed koala bear a stranger gave her after her younger sister died in a Christmas Day fire.

And every year since her little sister’s death, she has helped her family host a golf tournament to benefit children.

Reaching out to help others, even if they never get to know her, is one of the things that keeps this Virginia Tech freshman grounded.

Brandl and Don Scott, retired respectively from the Marines and Navy, were open for miniature wooden boat-building business during the grand opening of West Marine’s new location in Loehmann’s Plaza Shopping Center in Virginia Beach on Sept. 15.

Local pets and their owners can breathe a little easier.

The Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad recently received a donation of 10 kits containing oxygen masks designed specifically for pets. Each kit contains three masks- small, medium and large- that fit over an animal’s muzzle.

The kits will allow the squad – which operates a station at the Oceanfront and one in the Great Neck area – to keep a kit in each of its 10 rescue ambulances. The Invisible Fence Brand of Hampton Roads donated the kits as part the company’s national “Project Breathe” campaign. (more…)

California-based West Marine is consolidating its three stores in Norfolk and Virginia Beach into one “flagship” store on Virginia Beach Boulevard.

The boating supplies, fishing and watersports retailer wanted to show a variety of products in one 23,000-square-foot location in Loehmann’s Plaza Shopping Center in Virginia Beach, according to a news release. The new store opens Sept. 12. (more…)

West Marine, the boat and water products retailer, announced Thursday that it plans to close its three South Hampton Roads stores and consolidate them into a “flagship” store in Virginia Beach.

The 23,000-square-foot store is slated to open Sept. 12 at 4000 Virginia Beach Blvd., in Loehmann’s Plaza Shopping Center. It is bigger than the three existing stores combined, according to West Marine, based in Watsonville, Calif. (more…)

When a neighbor’s house caught fire near Town Center on July 13, Shirley Begay knew no one was home, but she worried about a pet in an upstairs bedroom.

“My first thought was the dog,” she said. “It was too smoky for us to go in, so we had to tell the firefighters where to find him.” (more…)
