I consider myself something of an expert when it comes to public restrooms. First, I’m on the road all the time, so I visit many of them.

Second, I’m female. Women use public restrooms 3.7 times more than men do.

OK, I just made that up. But it’s probably true. (more…)

Happy World Toilet Day!

Since 2001, Nov. 19 has been designated a day to draw attention to the fact that 2.5 billion people lack access to decent facilities. And yes, its major sponsor is a maker of toilet-cleaning products. But it has the blessing of the United Nations and is co-sponsored by a number of non-governmental organizations.

It also is the day that the best public throne in the USA is crowned in the America’s Best Restroom Contest. Fresh nominations are received annually by Cintas, a facility services provider. A team winnows down the selection to 10 finalists and then puts it to a public online vote. (more…)

In the not-too-distant past, news was shared principally through two means: local and network TV broadcasts and printed newspapers. Information was meted out once or twice daily, and it was a staple our parents often gorged on.

But in this new age, information flows around the clock – on our televisions, on what’s left of radio, on our computers, on our phones, in a stream of social-media links. We nibble on the overabundance like a fast-food snack, but little of what’s being said actually serves as nourishment. (more…)

Since many children are going to be gorging on Halloween candy in a few days, which is worse for the teeth — gooey and chewy candy or hard and sour candy?

“The chewy candy is sticky and does its damage for a longer period of time. The sour candy, since it tends to be acidic, it can dissolve enamel and, therefore, the sugar can attack the tooth more quickly,” said Dr. Richard Roadcap, a dentist in Colonial Heights. (more…)

Some of the world’s sharpest minds have toiled away at the problem of how to make better toilets. Japan has a smart (yet hackable) one, while the Gates Foundation held a competition and eventually backed Caltech’s solar design. But apparently there’s another toilet important competition out there: a ranking of America’s best bathrooms.

Last week, Cintas, a corporation that provides businesses with all sorts of restroom supplies, first aid products, entrance mats, and other necessities, announced the finalists in its annual Best Restroom contest, as it has done for the past 12 years. There are nine finalists including a “Victorian bathtub full of stones,” the Waldorf Astoria’s porcelain and marble surfaces, and the Tampa airport’s glass murals. (more…)

Business travelers on the go know it’s sometimes difficult to find a welcoming and clean place to, uh, go.

So it’s encouraging to see the 10 posh potties, cool commodes and imaginative public washrooms that restroom supply company Cintas has flushed out as nominees in the 12th annual contest for America’s Best Restroom.

The family-friendly restrooms at Chicago’s Field Museum won top prize in 2011 and last year the 83-stall restroom at a new Buc-ee’s convenience store in New Braunfels, Texas, just outside of San Antonio, was named king of the thrones. (more…)

Alberta’s best restroom is…in a gas station?!

Yes, you heard that right.

The restroom at the Valleyview Shell Super Station – a massive truck stop in a tiny town about 350 kilometres northwest of Edmonton – has been nominated as one of five finalists for Cintas’ Canada’s Best Restroom Contest.

According to the contest website, this unsuspecting front-runner was awarded the 2010 top honour by Convenience Store Magazine for its geo-thermal heating and cooling technologies. (more…)
