NEWPORT NEWS — Officials with the Mathis Independent School District in Texas were trying to learn how to improve their school buildings and maximize funding when they reached out to a national free resource.

Education Facilities Clearinghouse in Newport News sent a consultant to look at Mathis’ facilities and make recommendations, said Christopher Casarez, Mathis schools’ area administrator for operations. A thorough review of the facilities and their records helped officials there rearrange their priority list and find ways to save money in one place for use in another. (more…)

Norfolk-based Access College Foundation honored its scholarship recipients at its annual Luncheon Scholarship Awards, hosted by Wes Moore, New York Times bestselling author and CEO of BridgeEdU, an educational program that prepares students for college success.

The luncheon, held last Tuesday at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, honored 184 students from local high schools, some of whom are the first in their families to attend college. (more…)

Who and What? Westminster-Canterbury (WC) on Chesapeake Bay will host a day of information and activities all about the brain, as they invite residents and guests for the first ever Brain Fitness Day, featuring keynote speaker Dr. Paul Nussbaum, a clinical neuropsychologist and founder of the “Brain Health Center.” From “brain foods,” to activities like tai chi, yoga and ping pong, the day will bring awareness to the issue of brain health, touch on issues like dementia and Alzheimer’s and teach adults of all ages what they can do now to keep their brains healthy and active. WC Brain Fitness Director Scott Sautter will also be on hand to answer questions on how to “cross train your brain.” The event is part of WC’s “Wellness for Life” program series. (more…)

Who and What? After a successful first year, Westminster-Canterbury (WC) on Chesapeake Bay is excited to host Seatack Elementary School for the 2nd Annual Field Day on the Bay. Seniors from WC will celebrate the students’ promotion to middle school with a day of bocce and croquet competitions. Throughout the school year, seniors visited Seatack to teach the students how to play the games, in preparation for field day events. In addition to learning games that teach discipline and teamwork, the seniors serve as (grand) parental role models and form lasting memories with the students. Each month, Joel Rubin works to remind officials from eight south Hampton Roads communities, plus the media and other audiences, that the way we manage waste disposal today is the way to go in the future as well.

Most residents might believe their trash goes from their black cans into a landfill, but we are actually a progressive community in that regard. The garbage is trucked by city trucks to what are called “transfer stations” in each community, where it is sorted.  Most then travels in another vehicle to Wheelabrator Technologies in Portsmouth, where it is shredded, then fed into super hot boilers that converts the “fuel” into steam for the adjacent Norfolk Naval Shipyard and electricity for the nation’s power grid. The owner of a nearly 7-acre tract of waterfront land in Norfolk is asking a court to order a neighboring property owner to clean up and remove a fleet of derelict work and cargo vessels from a tributary of the Elizabeth River near the Campostella Bridge.

In a complaint filed late last month in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, 307 Campostella LLC says that Timothy Mullane, the owner of the adjacent property, has created a floating “junkyard” and that he has not followed through on repeated promises to clean up and clear out the waterway. (more…)
