What: The Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation will host its second annual “Back-to-School Prep Rally,” featuring guest speaker Dr. Aaron Spence, superintendent of Virginia Beach Public Schools, to get students and families in Hampton Roads excited and ready for the next school year.

Local celebrities, high school and college bands, cheerleaders and dance troops will energize the crowd, while attendees enjoy refreshments and enter to win prizes including tablets, tickets to local family events and gift cards.

The event aims to remind the community about the importance of education and the power it has to improve their lives and that of their family for generations.

When: Saturday, August 6, 2016; 10:00AM – 1:00PM

Where: Virginia Beach Convention Center

Cost/Registration: Free and open to the public; Registration is required at www.VBCDC.org

SUFFOLK, Va.— Habitat for Humanity South Hampton Roads is building nine new houses in Hampton Roads and they are looking to find families to move into them.

The homes are being built in the Lake Kennedy homes section of Suffolk. However, there is one problem they are facing: they are struggling to find enough people who can qualify financially to own and live in the houses. (more…)

We do not often work with the military, but we had a rare opportunity recently to produce a video for the Virginia Beach-based Dolphin Scholarship Foundation.

For the past 55 years, the foundation has provided scholarship assistance to dependents of men, and now women, who serve on Navy submarines.

Virginia Beach just got a bit brighter.

The jewelry store Diamonds Direct opened Friday at 4452 Virginia Beach Boulevard near Town Center. The 6,000-square-foot showroom features mounted and loose diamonds in necklaces, rings and more. The North Carolina-based chain has seven other locations, one of which is in Virginia. (more…)

Diamonds Direct has officially opened in the old IHOP location in Town Center.

It is the Charlotte, N.C.-based chain’s eighth location. Before the Virginia Beach location, the closest store was in Richmond.

“We could not be more excited about bringing the Diamonds Direct experience to Hampton Roads,” Virginia Beach general manager Tery Vari said in a release.

The 6,000-square-foot showroom at 4452 Virginia Beach Blvd. has a large selection of mounted and loose diamonds of all sizes, shapes and weights. (more…)

This week is National EMS Appreciation Week. It is a time to recognize the dedication of emergency personnel across the country. Virginia Beach is home to the largest volunteer-based EMS in the nation.

We were joined on The Hampton Roads Show by Amanda Chassey from Davis Corner Volunteer Rescue Squad, Erica Waldron from Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad and Tony Pirrone from Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad to discuss this unique and free service to the citizens of Virginia Beach. (more…)
