Tuesday is “America Recycles Day”, a day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling across the nation.

Locally, TFC Recycling is preparing to recognize streets and neighborhoods that regularly put those blue bins on the curb filled with paper, plastic and metal.

Starting in January “Green Streets” will honor blocks and neighborhoods that have recycling participation rates of 80 percent or higher. This is in the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Suffolk.

Visit http://www.greenstreetsva.com/ to nominate your street today.

TFC will factor in your nominations and electronic data it collects to choose the Green Street winners.

RICHMOND, VA – On Tuesday, November 15, Richmond’s homeless population will have the opportunity to receive a dental exam and dental treatment. In partnership with the VCU School of Dentistry and Dental Hygiene, the Virginia Dental Association (VDA), and the Virginia Dental Association Foundation (VDAF), Project Homeless Connect allows upwards of 75 patients to be seen for an exam, cleaning or extractions as needed. Patients will be seen from 8 a.m – 3 p.m., and the event takes place at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

The event is part of the Mission of Mercy (MOM) program, in which VDA dentists and others volunteer their time to provide free dental care to those in need. Created by VDA Executive Director Dr. Terry Dickinson in 2000, the MOM program hosts six or more projects each year in strategic communities across the state. (more…)

It was multiculturalism come to life: a group of Indian American kids in traditional dress, dancing on stage to a Bollywood song, followed by “Uptown Funk” and then the Korean pop smash “Gangnam Style.”

That was just one of dozens of performances at India Fest, a free daylong annual event held Saturday at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

Chesapeake, VA – Residents in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk and Virginia Beach can now recycle food and beverage cartons as part of their curbside recycling program. With the help of a grant from the Carton Council of North America, TFC Recycling, Virginia’s largest recycler, was able to install an optical sorting unit programmed to remove the items. The cartons are then baled and used to make new paper products and sustainable building materials.

Cartons are easy to recognize and are available in two types – shelf-stable, such as for juice, soup, broth and wine; and refrigerated, including containers for milk, juice, cream and egg substitutes. The number of products packaged in cartons continues to grow, and now residents of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk and Virginia Beach will be able to recycle more packaging than before. (more…)

SUFFOLK, Va. – It’s not a bird or a plane…it’s…Santa?!

Saint Nick went skydiving into a Toys for Tots event at Skydive Suffolk on Saturday.

This year, Skydive Suffolk owner Mike Mathney stepped it up and dressed as Santa!

The event, called Toys for Tots Fun Fly, was sponsored by Hampton Roads Radio Control.

The Fun Fly has collected thousands of toys and raised over $27,000 in the past 10 years. All proceeds to go Toys for Tots.

We can’t seem to get enough of “Coast Live.”

RCG clients like Diamonds Direct, Access College Foundation and Skydive Suffolk have already been guests on WTKR’s weekday show since its premiere in September 2016.

We knew the video that Joel Rubin and JPixx Video in Virginia Beach produced for the Southeast Maritime and Transportation Center (SMART) was good. But when Brad Mason of AMSEC, a national firm which provides technical services to the Navy and commercial maritime industry, told us that “every high school in our area should see” it, we knew we had hit the spot.

The approximately three-minute piece, which profiles four former apprentices who are now employed at local shipyards, was the latest in a series that Rubin Communications Group has produced. Most can be viewed at www.maritime-technology.org and several are now on the Department of Labor’s website as well. Called Make the Smart Choice, they tell high school students, career changers and veterans separating from the services why they should consider pursuing an educational path to job opportunities in the maritime trades and transportation logistics at the nation’s ports.
