Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads builds affordable homes to strengthen families and communities in seven local cities. Kirkpatrick said Bank of America has donated homes for rehabilitation and sale to needy families, while also providing many hours of employee volunteer time.

Princess Anne Courthouse Volunteer Rescue Squad received a grant from Firehouse Subs Strawbridge to buy LUCAS devices (valued at up to $15,000 each) for its ambulances. The portable device provides automated, consistent, uninterrupted chest compressions during CPR. Firehouse Subs franchisee Bob Bates opened the Strawbridge location in 2013, and as part of the company culture, he sought a charity to partner with. His restaurant collected donations by selling pickle buckets at $2 each and “rounding up” at the register. The result has been $53,265 donated to the rescue squad in less than two years by way of the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. Every city in Hampton Roads, in partnership with the local Chambers of Commerce, conducts a State of the City event each year.
It typically features an uplifting speech by the mayor, a PowerPoint with lots of pictures and a feel-good video. Some are better than others (often based on the mayor’s speaking ability), and most are typically a bit too long for the audience of business people who are looking at their watches, wondering when they can get back to work after lunch. Still, they are popular and well-attended programs, which is why city staff invests a great deal of time in producing them.
I’ve attended lots of these state of the city events but rarely have had an opportunity to be consulted about the content. Hampton changed that this year, thanks to their dynamic economic development director Leonard Sledge and city manager Mary Bunting. They wanted some creative ideas because Hampton has a new mayor, Donnie Tuck, and they wanted to help him make his first State of the City memorable. (more…)

The race happened Sunday around the City Center area, with the finish line outside the Marriott at City Center. Close to 1,000 people participated in the city’s inaugural DAV race, said Ashley H. Martin, a spokeswoman for the event.
Newport News joined Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati and Tulsa on DAV’s list of race series for this November. About 60 percent of participants, excluding walk-ups, were veterans, Martin said. Other non-veterans were likely participating to show support, she said.”There are lots of people out here who are here in honor of someone,” Martin said (more…)

The DAV Suffolk Chapter 5 and several other chapters across the state will walk, run and roll in this year’s DAV 5K. The event, beginning at 9 a.m. on Nov. 13, will be held at Oyster Point in Newport News, located at 701 Town Center Drive.
This is the first year Newport News has been selected as a national location for the race. For the past five years, the Virginia event was hosted at Newport News Park. The event typically attracted 500 to 600 participants, but there are expectations for close to 1,000 at this year’s event, according to Denice T. Williams, DAV Department of Virginia senior vice commander. (more…)

Michael Benedetto’s family-owned recycling facility has been processing household goods like aluminum cans, plastic and glass bottles, cardboard and paper for more than 40 years. Benedetto, president and owner of Tidewater Fibre Corporation, said that for as long as he can remember, the items the facility could recycle remained the same.
TFC announced on Tuesday — America Recycles Day — that residents of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Suffolk can now add cartons to the list of accepted recyclables. (more…)

Residents of South Hampton Roads can now include paper-based milk and juice cartons in their curbside blue recycling containers.
The change is the first time in years the list of items accepted for recycling has substantially expanded, said Michael Benedetto, the president and owner of Chesapeake-based TFC Recycling.
Benedetto, local officials and recycling industry advocates and professionals gathered Nov. 15 – America Recycles Day – at the company’s headquarters to formally announce the change. The Carton Council of North America supported the advancement with a grant, which was used to install optical sorting equipment. (more…)

A couple of workers in hard hats stood along a conveyor at the TFC Recycling facility Monday and with darting eyes sorted through a nonstop barrage of scraps coming their way. Every few seconds, one of the men plucked a carton from the stream with his gloved hand and tossed it onto another fast-moving belt.
Not long ago, these milk, juice and soup cartons were a nuisance, among the items that TFC’s owner, Michael Benedetto, wished people would stop throwing in with their recyclables.
