WHAT: Access College Foundation, which aids public school students with their college admission and financial aid processes in South Hampton Roads and Northampton County, will award 144 local high school graduates with scholarships during its 2018 annual luncheon. The total scholarship amount is $800,000.
New to the 2018 luncheon is The Joan P. and Macon F. Brock, Jr. Access Scholarship, a $25,000 scholarship created by the Access Board of Directors in memory of local education advocate and co-founder of Dollar Tree, Macon F. Brock, Jr. Joan Brock will present the scholarship to a student attending Brock’s alma mater, Randolph-Macon College, this fall.
This year’s keynote speakers are:
Actor Darryl Bell, most recognized for his role as college student Ron Johnson in the television show A Different World (1987-1993). Now working behind the camera, Bell runs an independent production company, developing projects for film and television. He regularly speaks around the country about his experience in the entertainment industry, diversity and the importance of higher education.
Lawyer Gwen Green, a 2000 graduate of Lake Taylor High School and former ACCESS Scholar. With help from ACCESS College Foundation, she attended The College of William and Mary then Harvard Law School. Today she works for Holland & Hart LLP in Washington, DC, advising companies on complex trade issues. She is a member of ACCESS Board of Directors.
