Norfolk, Va. – The annual Duck Tape Regatta, which has raised more than $150,000 for local charities since 2003, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Willoughby Harbor Marina (1525 Bayville St.) in Norfolk. This year, all proceeds will benefit the Roc Solid Foundation, which builds hope for children battling cancer.
The event begins with check-in at 8 a.m., where teams of six are given supplies (plywood, 2x4s, duct tape and screws) to build their boats. After four hours of boat-building (9 a.m. – 1 p.m.), the anticipation peaks to see which boats will prove their seaworthiness. Racing starts at 2 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony at 4 p.m. Teams can register for $75 at www.ducktaperegatta.net. Team registration increases to $85 the day-of, if spots are still available.
“We are so excited to be involved in this event,” says Chief Play Officer of the Roc Solid Foundation Eric Newman. “We look forward to a fun day of friendly competition, which will support our many programs that impact the lives of children with cancer.”
Founded in 2009 by pediatric cancer survivor, Eric Newman, Roc Solid Foundation has become known for its Play It Forward initiative, which has constructed nearly 100 playsets in children’s backyards throughout the Southeastern U.S.
