Inaugural Summit on Innovation and Technology Teams with Signature August Event in Virginia Beach

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VIRGINIA BEACH (July 9, 2014) — With a surfing championship, running races and concerts on the calendar, Virginia Beach should be the #1 destination on the east coast for innovation, business deal-making, entertainment and high-flying sports the last two weeks of August.

A group of forward-thinking community leaders has teamed with the Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships (August 17-24) to create “ICE on the Beach in August,” an umbrella event for the late-summer action at the Oceanfront. In addition to the ECSC, ICE features a wide variety of events designed to promote tourism and enhance Hampton Roads’ national reputation as a destination for “cool” summer events.

ICE events are open to the public but particularly geared to young entrepreneurs in the technology, music and entertainment fields who seek advice from experienced leaders in those arenas. “We want to continue Hampton Roads’ development as a hub for innovation,” says Thomas Flake, Director of the Peninsula Technology Incubator who helped spawn ICE. South by Southwest in Austin, Texas has approximately 160,000 attendees and estimates over $180 million in annual economic impact. “Combined with other events that occur during this late summer period, we believe over 250,000 people will attend an event at the Beach during this two-week period,” says Steve Almas, an ICE organizer.

Mid-Event Party

The public is invited to a concert by the All-American Vinyl Band on Sunday, August 24 from 6-8 pm at the 5th Street Stage. The band is a “supergroup” of national touring artists and features Baxter, Goodreau and Robert “Mousey” Thompson, the former drummer for James Brown. The concert concludes the Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships and kicks-off the second half of ICE. Admission is free.
